The Seiko VK63 belongs to Seiko's famous line of meca-quartz movements. It's the preferred engine for chronograph enthusiasts because it combines the best of two worlds: the unbeatable precision of quartz for daily timekeeping and the mechanical, instant, and fluid feel of an automatic chronograph when activating and resetting the hands.

Assembling a VK63 chronograph requires a bit more attention to hand alignment due to its three sub-dials. Here's a step-by-step guide to doing it perfectly.

Step 1: Understanding the VK63 Layout

Before touching anything, it's vital to know what each axle on a VK63 dial does:

  • Central axle: Hours, Minutes, and the large Chronograph hand (chrono seconds).

  • Sub-dial at 3 o'clock: 24-hour indicator (synchronized with the main time).

  • Sub-dial at 6 o'clock: Main running seconds hand (the one that moves continuously).

  • Sub-dial at 9 o'clock: Chronograph minute counter (up to 60 minutes).

Step 2: Preparation and Zeroing

The movement comes with a protective plastic stem and a small plastic piece that blocks the battery (remove it to activate the circuit).

  1. Place the movement in the holder.

  2. Remove the plastic stem by pressing the release point (indicated by a small arrow or the word "PUSH" engraved on the metal plate).

  3. Insert the definitive stem with the crown.

  4. Crucial step for the chrono: Press the top button (Start/Stop) and then the bottom button (Reset). This ensures that the chronograph axles are mechanically in their true "zero" position before setting the hands.

Step 3: Dial Installation

The VK63 dial has windows for the three sub-dials and usually a date window between 4 and 5 o'clock.

  1. Align the dial's rear feet with the holes on the movement spacer.

  2. Press gently until it sits flat.

💡 Revival Trick: If the feet bend or break when pressing the dial, don't panic. Trim the damaged pin flush and use small dots of heavy-duty double-sided tape (or specific dial adhesives) on the plastic spacer. Since there are three sub-dials, make sure the tape doesn't obstruct the movement or rotation of the small axles.

Step 4: Hand Placement (Maximum Precision)

Here, order and alignment are the key to success.

  1. Sub-dials first (3, 6, and 9): Use tweezers and rodico to set the micro-hands.

    • At 3 (24h) and 9 (Chrono minutes): They must point exactly vertically upwards (their sub-dial's 12 o'clock). Press carefully.

    • At 6 (Running seconds): You can place it pointing in any direction, as it's continuous.

  2. Hour and minute hands (Central axle): Turn the crown until the date changes completely. At that exact moment (midnight), press the hour hand pointing to 12:00. Just above it, press the minute hand also to 12:00.

  3. The chronograph hand (Large central seconds): Since we reset the movement in Step 2, the axle is at zero. Place the long hand pointing with millimeter precision to 12:00. Press firmly.

  4. Verification: Press the top chrono button to start it, then stop it, and press the bottom button. The large hand and the one at 9 o'clock should instantly return to 12 o'clock.

Step 5: Casing and Stem Adjustment

  1. Remove the stem by pressing the metal release point.

  2. Clean the inside of the case and ensure the case's chronograph pushers align with the movement's mechanical levers.

  3. Insert the movement into the case.

  4. Measure the definitive metal stem, cut off the excess with pliers, apply a micro-drop of threadlocker (blue Loctite), and screw on the crown. Insert it into the watch.

Step 6: Watertight Closure

  1. Ensure the case back's rubber gasket is in place (you can lubricate it with a bit of silicone grease).

  2. Screw on the case back by hand and give it the final tightening with the case back opener.
